HISTORY
Summer Community Baseball Arrives on the Scene
The Hockomock Summer Baseball League was founded in 1995 in North Attleboro, Massachusetts as a league dedicated to providing young baseball players with the opportunity to continue to play summer baseball after their town's spring recreation season had ended. Initially formed for all players of different skill, the league provided a place for players to continue to play the national pastime. Due to popular demand, the original single division structure was split in order to offer two levels of play throughout the different age brackets. Thus, the American and National Divisions were born.
While the HSL initially started at the age of 9, it was further expanded to include senior divisions up to age 18. This gave older players opportunity after high school and legion baseball to continue to play in the summer. With the immense growth of the league, the HSL evolved at this point and became the single destination in South Eastern Massachusetts for all-star level summer baseball.
Barnstormers: A League for Everyone
In 2007, with the HSL now focused on providing a league for top level talent, and with interest in youth baseball continuing to expand in New England, a group of individuals identified an opportunity to create a new league. The Barnstormer league was founded to provide a home for talented players who were not able to make their town's all-star rosters. With origins in Norfolk and Sharon, the league quickly expanded to include most of the towns who were participants in the HSL as well as some additional ones. The two leagues flourished separately, provide different, yet overlapping levels of baseball for nearly twenty years.
In 2024, seeking to leverage economies of scale and technologies, the Barnstormers merged with the HSL, resulting in a combined Boards of Directors, a new technology platform, and a relaunch of the combined brand. Most importantly however, was the return of the HSL to its original roots of providing baseball to players of all skill levels. Today, the Hockomock Summer League boasts a new mission that retains the best of what both the original Hockomock and Barnstormer leagues were individually in a new format with three divisions of play from 8U through 18U.
Spring Baseball for Older Players
The league expanded further in 2025 when it absorbed the Massasoit Spring League. The Massasoit league was established in 2010 as a solution to the problem that many towns have in regards to having enough 13U and older players to play baseball in the spring. The Massasoit facilitated play between towns, similarly to what the Hockomock did in the summer. When the Massasoit league was absorbed into the Hockomock Summer League, a new umbrella organization was created for both leagues, the Southeastern Massachusetts Baseball Organization, or SEMA Baseball.
Today, SEMA Baseball continues to provide the most complete summer baseball experience to the youth of South Eastern Massachusetts. Most proudly, the league has awarded hundreds of scholarships for long time players who are pursuing a higher education. The Leo Johnson, Erik Everton, Frank Giffune, Mark Boulter, and Chris O'Halloran Scholarships are named after former Hockomock Board Members who dedicated a combined total of over fifty years to the organization. Over $85,000 in scholarships have been awarded in their names over the past thirty years to many deserving outgoing baseball players.
Either on the field by providing a quality competitive league, or off the field by helping young men and women with financial assistance towards their college dreams, SEMA Baseball is the finest baseball organization in New England with it's focus on ensuring that all children who wish do so so can participate in a quality baseball experience.
